Automated Dispensing Cabinets: more security and fewer dispensing errors at the Hospital La Fuenfría in Madrid.

APD has recently implemented in the Pharmacy Service of the Hospital “La Fuenfría” an advanced automated storage and dispensing system for narcotics and psychotropic drugs (or “ADD”)

With this system the hospital will be able to carry out an exhaustive control of the inventory of this type of medicines, increasing the safety of the patients and automatically generating all the required documentation by the official organisms such as the annual declaration and the official book of narcotics.

The project has been executed by APD in collaboration with the heads of the Pharmacy Service and the IT Department of the Hospital. This is a pilot experience that has made it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the ADD in a half-stay hospital, allowing to increase the quality and safety of dispensing and also automating the traditional storage system for narcotics, increasing their safety by automating the work, as until now it was done manually.

This has meant the perfect combination of the traditional healthcare service of an almost centennial institution with the most avant-garde technology, in an effort that is already a reference for future projects in the hospital itself.

The pharmacy of the hospital handles an average of 192 patients per day with around 50.000 dispensing lines per month.
